WSET – Level 2 in Wines

Targeted employees in the wine and spirits industry as well as private individuals who want to gain solid all-round product knowledge.

WSET® ensures that you will explore the world’s classic wine regions and learn about them and their wines. This takes place through theoretical instruction and analytical tasting of 43 wines with an average price exceeding DKK 200. The study materials are in English, and the instruction is in Danish.

Industry professionals as well as dedicated amateurs consider Level 2 Award in Wines as the entry point, and the course does not require completion of Level 1.

With this knowledge, you can embark on your journey into the world of wine in a qualified manner.

Course Content

How to taste and describe a wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

In-depth learning about eight classic grape varieties – How climate, environment, viticulture, winemaking (including aging and cellar choices) influence the style and quality of the finished wine:

  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Grigio/Gris
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Riesling
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
  • Pinot Noir
  • Syrah/Shiraz

Additionally, you will learn about the style and quality of wines:

  • Produced in 22 regional wine regions
  • As well as wines from 70 geographical indications (GIs) worldwide

You will also learn about grape selection and production methods that influence the style of:

  • Mousserende vin
  • Fortified wine

Finally, you will gain knowledge about:

  • Labeling regulations used to indicate a wine’s origin, style, and quality
  • Concepts and processes involved in wine aging and serving
    Basic theory on food and wine pairing

Study Materials & Preparation

Upon registration for the course, you will immediately receive the study materials, allowing you to prepare thoroughly before the course begins. The study materials, valued at DKK 750, are non-refundable if you withdraw from the course.

The course materials are structured to align with the subsequent Level 3 certification, ensuring that both SAT/Systematic Approach to Tasting and the study materials provide a seamless transition from Level 2 to Level 3.

Learning Plan

One of the benefits of a WSET qualification is the presence of clearly defined learning objectives. This ensures you know exactly what topics you will cover and what knowledge you are expected to acquire by the end of the course.

Exam

The course concludes with a closed-book exam (without aids) lasting 60 minutes, where students must pass a 50-question multiple-choice exam. A passing score requires 55% correct answers. Your course fee includes one free re-sit.

In 2023, Vinuddannelse had a pass rate of 99.3%.

We encourage all students to register as soon as they decide to ensure we can gauge interest levels. Each course requires a minimum number of participants, and to maintain quality, there is also a maximum participant limit.

NB: If your course starts more than 3 months ahead, you do not need to pay until we confirm that the course will take place.

The training is aimed at employees in the wine and spirits industry as well as private individuals who want to gain solid all-round product knowledge.

Main content of the education

  • Analytical tasting technique and objective assessment of the wine’s quality according to the Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT)
  • Winemaking and common types of wine; still wines, sparkling wines and mulled wine.
  • Common white wine grapes; chardonnay, pinot grigio/gris, riesling and sauvignon blanc.
  • Common red wine grapes; cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, merlot and syrah/shiraz.
  • In addition, learning about 22 regional grape varieties from 70 appellations around the world.
  • Countries, regions and appellations including; Argentina, Australia, Chile France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Germany, South Africa and the USA.
  • Knowledge of decoding a wine label, the wine’s style, taste and production method.
  • Principles for the composition of food and wine.
  • Storage, faults in wine, knowledge of product limits, shelf life and rules for selling wine.

On the course you will be introduced to the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting© through systematic tasting of 45 wines. It is an excellent way to make the subjective wine tasting more structured through objective assessment criteria.

Here, you will basically learn to separate fruit acidity from tannin, fullness of flavor from flavor intensity, and with your newly acquired knowledge of grapes and wine styles, you will become better at putting into words which wine you have in the glass.

Employees in the wine and spirits industry as well as private individuals who want to gain solid all-round product knowledge.

Weekend Courses:
The course is conducted as weekend sessions, each lasting eight hours, providing additional hours compared to WSET’s recommended 16 hours.

Weekday Courses:
The course is conducted as evening sessions on weekdays, each lasting two hours.

For both course formats, there is typically at least one week between each session, allowing students to complete home preparation, estimated at a total of 20 hours.

Weekend Courses:
Price: DKK 12.750 including the exam, all study materials, and a bag with 6 Riedel glasses and a spittoon. The amount is VAT-exempt unless invoiced to a CVR number. The course fee includes full catering. On Day 1, you will receive a study bag containing 6 Riedel tasting glasses and a spittoon. If you do not pass the exam on the first attempt, one re-sit exam is included.

Weekday Courses:
Price: DKK 9.000, including the exam and all study materials. The amount is VAT-exempt unless invoiced to a CVR number.
A study bag with 6 Riedel glasses and a spittoon is not included but can be purchased for DKK 500 (the course can be completed without it). If you do not pass the exam on the first attempt, one re-sit exam is included.

The teaching will take place in English with the use of English technical terms. Teaching material and exams are in English.

The teaching is supported by a comprehensive glossary with relevant subject terms. This may not be brought to the exam.

The education concludes with a closed book (without aids) exam lasting 60 minutes, where the student must pass a multiple choice exam consisting of 50 questions. The exam requires correct answers of 55% to obtain a ‘Pass’.

  • 85-100% correct answer: Pass with Distinction
  • 70-84% correct answer: Pass with Merit
  • 55-69% correct answer: Pass
  • 0-44% correct answer: Fail unclassified

One free re-sit is included in the education fee. This is agreed with Vinuddannelse.dk and is included in future announced exams.

Upon passing the exam, the participant has the right to use the title WSET Level 2 Award in Wines as well as the logo, which will be sent by Vinuddannelse.dk.

Where does the teaching take place?

WSET’s teaching is subject to a wide range of formalities to ensure optimal conditions for the participant.

For example, emphasis is placed on the room having daylight, that the participants can store personal belongings in a safe manner, and that consideration is given to the disabled.
