WSET – Level 1

A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine.

Target group

Wine courses for beginners. For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine.

It is not mandatory to have passed Level 1 to study Level 2.

A minimum number of participants of 12 people is required in a class.

What you will learn

You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately:

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification except you must be of legal drinking age.

Education takes place in English as far as literature, teaching and exams are concerned. All exams are “closed book”.

The target group is private individuals or professionals without experience. The education is the entry level to the Level 2 Award in Wines. However, not a requirement for admission.

Detailed content:

  • Wine tasting: Taste and describe wines based on the WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting.
  • Food and wine matching: An introduction to the most important basic considerations when matching food and wine successfully.
  • Service and Storage: Learn the proper way to store and serve wine as well as to recognize common faults found in wine.
  • Types and styles of wine: Learn about what makes wines taste different.
  • Grape varieties: Learn about the characteristics and styles of wines made from the main grape varieties.
  • Main white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling.
  • Main black grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz.
  • White wine styles: Pinot grigio, Muscadet, Sancerre, Chablis, Sauternes.
  • Red wine styles: Claret, Beaujolais, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rioja, Chianti.

The exam consists of a test with 30 multiple choice questions in English. These must be answered within 45 minutes. To pass, a correct answer percentage of 70% is required.

Targeted at private individuals or new employees in the industry without prior knowledge of wine and winemaking.

9 hours in addition to preparation. The course ends with a test with 30 multiple choice questions. If this is passed, a diploma and pin are obtained and the right to use the designation WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. The training course is carried out over two evenings of 4.5 hours respectively.

Price DKK 3,400 including exam. The amount is VAT exempt unless invoiced to a CVR number.

The price includes all study material, a study bag with 6 Riedel glasses and a spittoon, a light evening meal, exam and re-sit exam as well as the diploma and pin.

The teaching will take place in English with the use of English technical terms. Teaching material and exams are in English.

The education ends with a written exam lasting 45 minutes, in which the student must pass a multiple choice exam consisting of 30 questions. The exam requires correct answers of 70% to obtain a ‘Pass’.

Should you fail the exam, the price includes one re-sit.

Where does the teaching take place?

WSET’s teaching is subject to a wide range of formalities to ensure optimal conditions for the participant.

For example, emphasis is placed on the room having good light, that the participants can store personal belongings in a safe manner, and that consideration is given to the disabled.
